The Curriculum of The Vanara tribe MMA
Now it might be called MMA in modern times, but us here at The Vanara Tribe call it “Mallayudha” just like how it has been called in our Ancient Texts.
“Malla” usually means unarmed or wrestler and “Yuddha” means battle or war. Hence, “Mallayudha” refers to unarmed or wrestling combat without the use of any weapons.
If you go to any of the Ancient Indian Temples, you would find references of “Mallayudha” in the carvings and inscriptions. Even The Mahabharata references “Mallayudha” many times specifically when Krishna fought Kamsa and when Bheema fought Jarasandh, the king of Magadha at the time.
And “Mallayudha” did not have different styles or elements like BJJ, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo etc. like we have today in Modern MMA.
Rather it had 4 different Philosophies of Combat which we include in the Training Curriculum here at The Vanara Tribe:
The Hanumanti Style
Inspired by the fighting style of Lord Hanuman and the Vanara warrior tradition from Indian Itihasa (Ramayana) and ancient akhada culture.
Think of Hanumanti as a way of fighting + a way of being, rather than a syllabus-bound system.
A “Hanumanti” warrior fights like a Vanara — raw, grounded, unpredictable, and relentless.
Focusing on Quick Sharp Strikes, Timing, Trickery, Quick direction changes and technical sweeps, slams and throws in the Clinch.
The entire philosophy of this style is to defeat a stronger heavier opponent using skills, speed and technique.
If you go to any traditional Muay Thai gymnasiums in Thailand today, you will see a lot of moves named after Hanuman.
Which will give you a good idea of how this Style works.
Involving Striking, elbows and knees in the clinch, quick footwork, clinching sweeps and throws that focus more on agility, skill and timing rather than outright Strength and Power.
The Jambavanti Style
Inspired by the fighting style of Lord Jambavan – The Immortal Bear king and one of the oldest beings in our Itihasas.
A warrior who fought Indra, Ravana, and even Krishna
A symbol of:
Endurance over speed
Wisdom over aggression.
Crushing strength over flash
If Hanuman is lightning, Jambavan is the mountain.
This style focuses on having a really wide and stable stance with heavy grounding.
As the name implies the style emphasizes on being heavy and suffocating like a Bear to your opponent applying holds and techniques like the Bear hug, Kimura, Triangle Choke, Americana etc.
The Pressure and grip are meant to eventually suffocate, tire out and finish your opponent.
Any striking involved is not flashy and meant to create openings for grabbing the opponent.
The Bheemaseni Style
Inspired by the fighting style of Bheemasena or Bheem, the second eldest Pandava in Mahabharat.
Known for his immense strength and straight away attacking the opponent without the use of any fancy maneuvers.
This style emphasizes on using Direct Power and Raw Strength to overpower your opponent.
Bheema was a warrior who fought face-to-face, never subtle
The slayer of Bakāsura, Hidimba, Jarāsandha
A master of gada yuddha (mace combat)
A symbol of righteous rage — controlled fury, not chaos
Bheemaseni does not outmaneuver.
It overpowers.
Even empty-hand techniques feel like swinging a mace.
No point-fighting.
No volume striking.
Each strike is meant to break or disable.
A lot of Modern Day Wrestling uses techniques from Bheemaseni.
The Jarasandhi Style
Inspired by the fighting style of Magadh Naresh Jarasandh.
In the Mahabharata it is mentioned that Jarasandh fought for 14 days with Bheema in Mallayudha before being finally defeated by Bheema at the advice of Sri Krishna when he was split in two.
The fight exhausted both the fighters but Jarasandh was still standing and in the end Krishna had to intervene when he saw Jarasandh could not be defeated by conventional means.
According to the Itihasa, Jarasandh was born in 2 pieces and was joined together by the Rakshasi Jara. Hence, he was named as Jarasandh.
The Philosophy of this style hence forth focuses on using the body as a combined unit and attacking the joints of the opponent to break the joints into 2 pieces or immobilize them.
Using techniques like the Armbar, Kneebar, Neck cranks etc.
It focuses on being Persistent to weather the storm until your opponent is exhausted, then you go in for the finish.
Jarasandh didn’t dominate by speed or brute strength alone. He dominated by endurance, adaptation, and refusal to break.
Where Bheemaseni ends fights with force, Jarasandhi refuses to be ended at all.
If Bhīma is the earthquake,
Jarāsandha is the fault line that never stops moving.
